The Ohio Domestic Violence and Disability Task Force is hosting a one-day conference to continue addressing the issues of domestic violence and abuse against Ohioans with disabilities. This event is a follow-up to the successful conference in 2004.

You are invited to join your peers—individuals with disabilities, family members, service providers and other professionals—in building upon our understanding of the unique dynamics of disability and violence, and to identify next steps in working collaboratively to address this issue.

Michelle Schwartz and Lee Ann Cameron of SafePlace, Austin TX will provide keynote presentations and training. Since 1996, A Safety Awareness Program (ASAP) of SafePlace has provided education, intervention and counseling services to survivors of sexual abuse/assault, domestic violence and caregiver abuse.

Participants will explore practical ways to address barriers to victim services that keep people with disabilities silent about their issues of abuse, neglect and exploitation. The afternoon will be divided into two concurrent sessions.

Self-Advocate Workshop

Research documents that people with disabilities face increased risks for violence and abuse. Yet, historically, people with disabilities have been excluded from personal safety education. In this interactive workshop, participants will:

• Identify personal safety skills for living, working and playing in the community.

• Practice strategies for personal safety in a variety of settings.

• Explore ways to create a supportive community, including peer support.

Professional Workshop

This workshop for disability and victim service professionals will focus on providing concrete information on working sensitively with survivors of violence that have disabilities, and how to increase access to victim services for people with disabilities. In this interactive session, participants will:

  • Examine ways to increase access to victim services.
  • Explore the dynamics of caregiver violence, power and control in the lives of people with disabilities.
  • Identify the purpose, goals, and core elements of personal safety education.
  • Create a plan of action for our next steps in efforts to increase safety and to provide sensitive responses to survivors of violence who have disabilities.
  • Learn how to strengthen our partnerships with local victim service agencies.
