The Ohio State University Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator’s Office and the Division of Occupational Therapy are co-hosting a one-day seminar to address the issue of how to help employees with disabilities increase their success in the workplace. A primary focus will be accommodations for social, behavioral, and mental health issues.
This seminar will help service providers such as job coaches, counselors and social workers, rehabilitation counselors, disability case managers, occupational therapists, and human resource specialists to better understand the unique challenges facing individuals with psychiatric disabilities in the work environment.
Registration fee is $75 which includes continental breakfast, lunch, and resources. Register today. Space is limited to the first 100 registrants. Deadline for registration is October 25, 2006.
Speakers from a variety of disciplines will provide practical information on working with clients to achieve success in the workplace. In this seminar, participants will:
Improve their understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it applies in practice to employees with mental illness;
Improve their knowledge of appropriate human resource and legal interventions with employees who have a mental illness;
Learn to manage workplace dilemmas and contextual issues common to employees with mental illness;
Participate in a case study to demonstrate how to use these ideas to create success stories for employees with mental illness;
Participate in a question and answer period with a panel of experts.
This is a 6 hour CEU course pending approval for occupational therapists, counselors and social workers, certified disability management specialists, certified rehabilitation counselors, certified case managers, and certified adult services providers. A certificate of attendance will also be provided.

8:30 a.m. Welcome/
Introductions.
8:45 a.m. “ADA Fundamentals in the Workplace”
L. Scott Lissner (ADA Coordinator, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio)
will present a brief overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Titles
I through V, including a presentation of rights, responsibilities, and resources
surrounding employment. Key points will include which employers and employees
are covered, disclosure and the value of having a clear policy, reasonable accommodations
for balancing employee needs and productivity, job coaching as a reasonable accommodation,
and federal tax incentives for employers.
9:30 a.m. “Stemming the Rising Tide of Psychiatric Disability: Helping People
Stay on the Job”
Mark Raderstorf (Licensed Psychologist, CRC, CCM, and President, Behavioral Medical
Interventions, Minneapolis, Minnesota) will address the sociological, economic,
and medical factors that have made psychiatric conditions the second leading
cause of disability in the United Sates. As a former psychotherapist, Mark will
share the medical provider perspective on the challenge of managing psychiatric
patients who request a leave of absence from work, highlighting the do’s and
don’ts in the decision making process of staying on the job. Drawing on his disability
management experience, he will explain steps to compassionately manage employees
with mental illness and maintain productivity standards. Successful methods of
communication between employers and providers will be emphasized, including the
effective and timely use of job coaches and other rehabilitation providers.

11:00 a.m. “Developing Effective Remain At Work and Return To Work Plans for
Persons with Psychiatric Disabilities”
John Finch, Ph.D. (Vice President of Rehabilitation & Employment, Center of Vocational
Alternatives [COVA], Columbus, Ohio) will discuss the multidisciplinary approach
that is critical to effectively resolving the issue of helping employees with
mental health disabilities succeed in the workplace. Both employers and rehabilitation
professions need to integrate legal, human resource, clinical, and rehabilitation
aspects to maximize opportunities for persons with mental illness to remain employed
or return to employment.
12:00 p.m. “Real Life Scenarios: Returning People to Work”
Using real case studies, Mark Raderstorf and John Finch will demonstrate how
employers and rehabilitation professionals can cost-effectively utilize the tools
highlighted in their previous presentations in a coordinated fashion to create
success stories for employees and employers alike.
12:30 p.m. Lunch (provided on site).
1:45 p.m. “The ADA and Employees with Psychiatric Disability”
Matthew Miko, J.D. (Chief Legal Counsel, Ohio Civil Rights Commission, Columbus,
Ohio) and Jane Perry, J.D. (Ohio Legal Rights Service, Columbus, Ohio) will provide
information on the reasonable accommodation process in the context of accommodating
persons with social, behavioral and mental health problems. In addition, they
will provide guidance with respect to facilitating the “interactive process,” working
with employers, and evaluating potential safety risks.
3:15 p.m. Afternoon Break.
3:30 p.m. Panel Discussion
A question and answer period with a panel consisting of all the day’s presenters
and individuals who have used these practices successfully.
